Mining/smelting is not a linkable profession as of 3.3 and continuing into 4.0.1. This is a Blizzard bug.
Consequently, ProfessionVault cannot show you the smelting tradeskill UI of another toon.

Please provide any additional information below.

Mining/Smelting is linkable. Apart from ProfessionsVault, I am also using some other tradeskill addons:

• Advanced Tradeskill Window
• Enhanced Tradeskill UI
• Ackis Recipe List, and
• Syllabus
  

One of these addons seems to provide the linkable profession icon.
I will have to check which of these addons is in charge of supplying the tradeskill icon and let you know. Please be patient, since I am bugtesting a couple of addons on the German client at the moment, and also still have some more translations to work on.

If you can show me any addon that can create a USABLE link to smelting/mining I would be very happy. I've done an exhaustive search on spellids and databits and come to the conclusion that it's simply not possible on the live client, but perhaps I missed something :)

Note some addons (like Ackis and Armory) provide a link, but it does not work (ie open a TradeSkillUI) when clicked.

You're right. I just tried it out when I was online with a char, that does not have this profession herself. :-(
But since I have this link in the tradeskill window itself, which I don't have when going online with Blizzard's standard UI, I believe there must be a way to work around the standards. So I will keep on searching.

This blizzard bug remains, however starting in 5.0 we at least track the mining/smelting rank, so you can see the skill level even though you cannot open the smelting window from another toon.
