What is the enhancement in mind? How should it look and feel?
Add a checkbox to "hide wall-of-text chat bubbles"
If enabled,* any speech you say to /say or /party (which can generate chat bubbles, depending on the interface options of others)* and is longer than 1 line of text (a certain number of characters, string.length)
will cause you to "/say ..." which will immediately replace the large wall-of-text chat bubble with a small one that only says "..."
Additional considerations:* Enable/disable this by scenario? Maybe you only want this feature in raids, but not when solo, and that kind of thing? I'm thinking that solo vs. any group is probably enough of a distinction. Maybe just do it that way, so this option doesn't apply when you're solo, but does when you're in any group.* configurable string length to let the user decide what constitutes a wall of text?* option to change the text? could make it say "<wall of text>" which is still fairly small, or "SS" or "SpeakinSpell" The dots seem more elegant but might not make sense why you said that. "<wall of text>" makes it pretty clear.
Update for WoW 5.0
I've been using this idea for some time now. In applicable speeches, I add a second line that says "." The single dot replaces any chat bubble from the line before it, and it goes away pretty quickly. I've been doing it manually to specific speeches.
That is the function which should be automated through a checkbox under the general options. I don't think it needs to be separately configurable per scenario. One checkbox to "suppress chat bubbles" should be enough, but I'm leaning towards additional configuration to change:
Perhaps it should default to anything longer than 20 characters is replaced by ":)" but the feature should be OFF by default.
