This project is abandoned and its default file will likely not work with the most recent version of World of Warcraft. Whether this project is out of date or its author has marked it as abandoned, this project is no longer maintained.

This project is being retired in favor of its successor, StarTip2. This new addon is still in beta, but it already fixes bugs that existed in StarTip the original. http://wow.curseforge.com/addons/startip2/

Customization Tips

StarTip provides an environment for your scripts.. This environment provides WoW API functions such as UnitName, UnitLevel, etc... If it's not available, try _G. Also, much of LuaTexts by Shefki is included, but be aware that modifications have been made and elements either removed or added. Also be aware that how you format your return values is incompatible with Pitbull4's implementation. In StarTip you simple return a string that's already formatted.

There are many plugins available. I imagine if you're willing to write an actual Lua script that you won't mind reading code. Go into the Libs folder and click into LibScriptable-1.0. Note all the LibScriptablePlugin* elements. These are what provide StarTip's script environment with functions and other elements.

Check here for a brief tutorial.

StarTip also has LibDogTag support. Just return the dog tag from your script, and click the check mark labeled "Dog Tag" to enable this feature.

Note: If you know of a library that you want to make available in your own scripts. let me know and I'll see about writing a plugin for it.

Bug Reports and Feature Requests

StarTip will take advantage of BugGrabber if it's installed, and will attempt to disable lines that cause errors. Note that the errors are not suppressed.

Ok, v1.5.41 should fix the background issue. The new module 'Background' had a typo inside the .toc file. Sorry for the fuss. hehe

Also, the Position module should work again. It was given a good amount of attention recently, but I failed to check for all config cases, so some positions were shifted half the screen's width.

Oh and there was another typo in Position module that caused the stack trace seen below when you had the tooltip positioned in a static placement.

There is a typo on line 573 of the position.lua file - it should be 'environment', I believe

I just updated to the latest version and all character backrounds are grey, almost white. Backround colors are unchanged in settings.

Having the same issue. All units with the exception of tooltips have a background as if tapped.

Maybe I'm missing something, I've been missing with this all day and can't get anything other than Cursor stuff to work with the "Positioning", even with v1.5.37. It's the only addon I have enabled. If I set it to "Screen bottom" it sets in the middle of the screen ignoring any offsets, same with "Screen Top".

BTW thanks for all the hard work. Love the addon, best tooltip addon yet and going to be hard to beat.

Any idea why the latest version is not in the curse client? I mean I still have the last version as "up to date". No sign of a new version. Unless I download manually from here.

You have all the tools at your disposal to customize StarTip however you wish. There's plans sometime in the future to provide presets, but that's not priority. Not any time soon anyways.

Is there any way to make the tooltip using less space?
Like:
name - class - race - level <newline>
guild - rank - faction <newline>
...
Atm the tooltip is just wasting too much space and is way too huge.

Hello.
I just ran into this bug:
1x StarTip_Position-1.0\Position.lua:409: Usage: <unnamed>:SetPoint("point" [, region or nil] [, "relativePoint"] [, offsetX, offsetY])
StarTip_Position-1.0\Position.lua:409: in function <StarTip_Position\Position.lua:400>
Happened with startip - positioning - worldunit - screen right - adjust y to -220 and moving mouse around on screen. error suddenly popped up.

I would also like to ask if there some easy way to "compress" the tooltip, like putting class/race in one line. Sadly Im no programmer.

Ok, this was a bad idea. 1526b threw a bunch of errors as my char loaded into wow.
Going to try the last release version.
Btw Im on a german client which might be the cause of this.
