TankPoints
TankPoints 2.0 - A benchmark for survivalbility gear
About TankPoints
TankPoints was created to help myself compare different pieces of tanking gear, because it was difficult to decided at a glance like whether 12 defense is better then 1 dodge.
TankPoints can be seen as how much damage you can take before damage reduction, it considers your max health, armor, defense, dodge, parry, block, block value, resilience, crushing blow chance, miss, crit reduction, talants, buffs, stance/forms, and more.
Keep in mind though, that higher TankPoints does not make a better tank, it is only a benchmark for survivalbility gear but does not calculate threat. It can not decide for you what you should wear for what boss, but it can provide you with a wealth of information what will hopfully be useful for choosing gear.
About TankPoints 2.0
TankPoints 2.0 is a complete rewrite of my original TankPoints for WoW 2.0 using the Ace2 framework.
It has a much improved TankPoints algorithm, intergrates nicely into the character stats dropdown menu, and shows a lot more information then the original TankPoints.
2.0 introduced a new combat ratings system which made it even harder to compare gear, in order to code combat rating support for TankPoints, the exact rating to percentage formula is required which Blizzard didn't give us. Luckly, I have suceessfully reverse engineered the rating formula for all levels and coded an addon called "Rating Buster" that converts ratings on item tooltips into percentages, you can try it out here.
Rating Buster: http://wow.curse-gaming.com/en/files/details/4991/rating-buster/
How to use
Gravity has writen an awesome 7 page guide to using TankPoints on his blog: http://pwnwear.com/tankpoints-user-guide/
The value of Block
The value is Shield Block Value and Block Rating is highly dependent on what you are tanking.
Its very good for mobs that don't hit very hard like in heroics, but is worth much less on hard hitting bosses in 25 man raids.
At level 80, TankPoints' default mob damage is tuned to 25 man raids, with a value of 24365 damage before mitigation.
You can change this value to match what you plan on tanking by using the "/tp mob damage" command in game.
A mob damage of 10505 for example is a good value for level 80 heroics.
TankPoints also calculates the value of Shield Block for Warriors, and Holy Shield for Paladins.
You can use the "/tp player sbfreq" command to set a shield block frequency that matches your rotation (in how many seconds AFTER cooldown finishes).
For most tankadins rotations, you will have a 100% Holy Shield uptime, using "/tp player sbfreq 1" will tell TankPoints that you will use Holy Shield 1 second after cooldown finishes (every 9 secs)
TankPoints 2.0 Features

Using Hit < Crushing < Crit < Block < Parry < Dodge < Miss - Support for mob stats:
- Mob level - defaults player level 3
- Mob damage
- Mob melee crit chance
- Mob melee crit bonus
- Mob melee miss chance
- Mob spell crit chance

Improved TankPoints Calculator
TankPoints User Interface
- Intergrated in to the Character stats dropdown menu (See Screeshots)
- When TankPoints is selected it displays:
- TankPoints
- Melee Damage Reduction
- Block Value
- Spell TankPoints
- Spell Damage Reduction
- TankPoints tooltip:
- Your stance
- Mob Stats
- Mob Level
- Mob Damage (after damage reduction)
- Mob Crit Chance
- Mob Miss Chance
- TankPoints per StatValue - Shows how much TankPoints you gain for each stats with equal item values, because the values below are equal in the item value formula, you can use this data to see what gives the most bang for the buck in terms of item budgets.
- 1 Agility =
- 1.5 Stamina =
- 10 Armor =
- 1 Resilience =
- 1 Defense Rating =
- 1 Dodge Rating =
- 1 Parry Rating =
- 1 Block Rating =
- 1.54 Block Value
- Option to hold down ALT key will show how much TankPoints you gain for each stat point
- 1 Agility
- 1 Stamina
- 1 Armor
- 1 Resilience
- 1% Defense
- 1% Dodge
- 1% Parry
- 1% Block
- 1 Block Value
- Melee Damage Reduction tooltip:
- Armor Damage Reduction against mob level - Useful because the default armor tooltip only shows the reduction for the same level
- Mob Level, Player Level
- Combat Table - Hit < Crushing < Crit < Block < Parry < Dodge < Miss. The total of these chances must be capped at 100%, if you exceed 100% then lower priority values will be pushed off the table. For example, when you press shield block ( 75% block chance), hit, crush and crit will all be pushed off and will be 0, your real block chance will also be capped at (100% - Parry% - Dodge% - Miss%)
- Block Value tooltip - Block Value should have been included in the default UI, but they didn't so I coded my own function that does it, strength, items, talents(warrior, paladin, shaman) are all considered in the algorithm.
- Mob Damage before Damage Reduction (armor and stance effects)
- Mob Damage after Damage Reduction
- Blocked percentage
- Block Value / Mob Damage after DR
- Block Chance
- Equivalent Block Mitigation
- Block Chance * Blocked percentage:
This can be seen equal with the same amount of dodge or parry.
- Spell TankPoints Tooltip - Shows your strongest school by default
- Your stance
- TankPoints at the following Melee/Spell Damage Ratio
- 25% Melee Damage 75% <school> damage
- 50% Melee Damage 50% <school> damage
- 75% Melee Damage 25% <school> damage
- Can manually cycle through all schools by left clicking the stat
- Reset back to showing the strongest school by right click the stat
- Spell Damage Reduction - Shows your strongest school by default
- Shows damage reductions for all schools
- Same click functions as the Spell TankPoints Tooltip

have to agree with melk , stamina seems a bit overrated in the calculations. i must say i have no idea how these calculations actually work , i put no research into that. but eg. the blue pvp reward helm (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=38063) give me slightly higher tankpoints as the enchanted thorium helm (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=37364), which by many is considered (on of) the best blue tanking helms there is, where as the pvp helm is clearly made for pvp.
Wish there was something like this and HealPoints for casters, that tracked how much damage you could deal off of one bar of mana or something to better judge how much you could do with what gearsets.
I think I've spotted a flaw in your otherwise thorough calculations :)
The way I see it, if you're only taking the damage you can withstand without healing into account, you're basically only creating a solo benchmark.
As soon as you have a healer behind you, you can start adding that healer's total healing capacity to your hitpoints, and once you're in a raid, with the potential healing capacity of up to eight or nine healers, your hitpoints will be pretty insignificant. My guess is that at this point, more hitpoints only serve to cushion the harder blows, buying the healers some time to patch you up before you die :)
I have a few thoughts that may or may not help you in future updates:
- Expand the benchmark to take battle duration and mob damage into consideration, then you can calculate damage resisted (DPS*Duration*DR) + HP = total tanking capacity over that given time.
This will make the whole thing more situational, but I don't think there's any way to avoid this: your gear will always be situational, amd the benchmark might as well reflect this. This method could result in a few separate benchmarks such as boss battle tank points (High DPS, long duration) and trash mob tank points (Medium DPS, short duration). Even better, mods such as recap could be used to gather information about actual mob DPS in popular endgame instances.
- Make some sort of estimation of the value of stamina as a means of cushioning the damage, I don't know exactly how this would work, but you could for instance take into consideration the chance of getting double-critted, and whether or not this will kill you, and then determine how likely you are to die before you get healed (I know this is probably waaay too complicated and/or bothersome to actually calculate though)
- Again, find some common figures for the amount of physical damage mobs in various places hit for, and use this to factor the shield blocking into the equation, this would also be very situational, as a hard-hitting boss mob such as ragnaros will probably laugh at your puny blocks while it'll be pretty useful against the panther encounter in zul'gurub.
That being said, and whether or not these high-flying ideas of mine will ever get implemented, I'd like to point out that I do think the mod is a good idea. But I also think there's a risk of it being used as the only measure of tanking potential, even though (like any other benchmark) it will always be situational, and that you'll still have to use your common sense :)
I also do think that you'd actually make the benchmark more general if you removed stamina from the equation (since you'll almost always tank in the presence of a healer that can heal you for your max HP many times over)and went with something along the lines of "go for XXX stamina (to survive potential double-crits and have HP to spare) and then use Tank Points to balance the remaining stats out"
I just redid your experiment, a rogue popping evasion and me popping recklesness...he dodged at least 20 attacks
I dont see how you could be so wrong?
I'm curious, it would be nice to use. Great idea!
I see that most of these points are generic for any class, but when it talks about defensive stance, will that screw up my points since im a paladin?
Thnaks for the mod, helps alot. but would be great if you could make a button that would tell the points, including the stats to the chat.
That's not correct krasher or it conflicts with the tool tip if it is. The screenshots below are based solely on the tool tips. Only dodge is shown but parry and block are identical. I don't have the data collected for crits.
at 388 dodge is 8.72%
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c256/Jonasxtx/388.jpg
at 413 dodge is 9.72%
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c256/Jonasxtx/413.jpg
the only stat change with this is stamina
Sounds Interesting Krasher
could you state where your get your numbers?
that 20 defense is -1% crit?
At level 60, 20 defense = -1% crit, +1% dodge, +1% parry, +1% block. Not 25, but 20.
so 100 defense is -5% crit
Your mod calculates it as -4% crit.
(400 - (60*5)) * 0.04*0.01 = 0.04 according to your mod.
Hi, im missing some of the info an older mod would show called DamageToKill. It isnt updated any longer and points to here (original is here) http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?addid=894 http://www.curse-gaming.com/modscreens.php?id=1977 This is what i miss, info telling how much damage you would need to do to kill me. Thanks in advance if you would want to implement it, and thanks for a great mod and for the time working on it =)
I would like if you could click an item and then it would automatically calculate the tankpoints as if you'd been wearing that item over your currently equipped one.
Think something like that is possible?
Hi there. Just found out about this addon prior to patch 1.9. Worked like a charm and found it very useful. However, after patch 1.9, it is not showing up in the character info screen. This is after updating cosmos (tried it with alpha version too), and deleting and reinstalling TankPoints. Yes, it is enabled in the Addons screen before you log your character on. Anyone having troubles too? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Basically, go for more tankpoints. Tankpoints are a number created by this mod in order to show you how good you are at tanking.
I am very interested in this mod, but I find it pretty confusing. All I see is a bunch of numbers without a real sense as to their meaning. I've never been very mathmatically inclined hehe. Is there any place I can read up on this mod for a "Tank Points for Dummies" type of tutorial? :)
Download Winrar, and extract it using that
What kind of file is that? The extension I get is .rar instead of a .zip file. I don't know what to do with a .rar file. I had to choose to download v0.4.6 instead. Any help would be welcome.
Could you give an example on how to interpret the values Tankpoints, Total reduction and Crit reduction. Which one (or all?) is most important? For instance when I use Hyperion Helm of defence (485 armor and +18 defence) over Helm of Valor (526 armor, +23 sta, +9 agi) I get a higher number for both crit reduction and total reduction, but tankpoints are lower. So im still confused on which is better, do I go for crit reduction or for tankpoints? If the tool is designed to help us choose, this should be more clear. I suggested earlier a recalculation to one number so we can really compare, but this might technicaly not be possible. Please give a comment so we can get more out of this cool tool! :)
It would be really nice if you could figure block somewhere into the equation. With Improved Shield Block, it is the most reliable of the dodge/block/parry values and with Wrath/Might 3 piece set/ZG enchants its not uncommon to mitigate 150+ per block. That is significant.
H
Wow, polk have got a really neat idea here. That sounds like a very cool idea. I hope it's possible to add this feature, Whitetooth. Good luck!
