This project is abandoned and its default file will likely not work with the most recent version of World of Warcraft. Whether this project is out of date or its author has marked it as abandoned, this project is no longer maintained.
Simple language selection
Babel is a simple data object that can be placed in any LibDataBroker-capable object viewer. It will add a "launcher", a little goldenfish, that you can click to toggle between your character's spoken languages.
If you need any more help using this addon, please let me know, because it was meant to be as simple as an addon could possibly be!
This is that very same mod, but re-developed to use LibDataBroker instead of just FuBar. By downloading Broker2FuBar, another addon, you can use Babel just like you used to use FuBar_BabelFu. If you see any differences in terms of capabilities, please let me know, as that is a bug.
If you still prefer the old version, it can be downloaded from the Curse web page as an older file.
I recall a plugin called BableFu which was great for roleplayers, and was wondering if you were planning to include one or two of its features? First, the selected language was saved through logging out, so if logged in next the character would still be speaking Darnassian and not Common. The other feature was being able to choose which channels the selected language applied to. So for example you could decide to speak your racial language in /say, /yell and /guild, but let /party and /raid stick with the faction language.
1.2, released just now, includes only superficial fixes to the TOC format. No functionality changed in-game, rather just some changes to make it easier for anyone using the TOC for other purposes (such as the curse client).
First, I want to make everyone aware that version 1.1 of Babel fixes all known issues, and includes the functionality to toggle Babel's control of various channels of speech (Say, Party, Guild, etc.) on and off.
Second, I want to apologize for how long this took to come to fruition. I know I made a lot of people angry by "breaking" a working addon. There's really no excuse except for the one true one: I'm not paid to do this, and I had more important things to do in life at the time. In any case, please accept my apology, and Babel should now be up to where I envisioned it would be months (years!) ago.
Finally, one additional note (and I will be making this clear on the "About Babel" section of this page), I want to remind everyone that "Babel" is the next evolution of a previous addon, called "FuBar_BabelFu". You can still download FuBar_BabelFu if you want a FuBar-specific addon from the "Downloads" section of this page. However, I highly recommend upgrading to Babel, as it uses the much more powerful and customizable "LibDataBroker" interface.
Thanks to everyone who provided comments, suggestions, and bugfixes. Please keep them coming!
I've recently switched to using LDB addons instead of fubar, and I'm having a problem with Babel. Basically whenever I enable it, all my other Ace-based addons don't load. Bartender 4, chinchilla, OneBag/bank and a couple of others.
I'm guessing this is some kind of library problem? If you need any further info just send me a pm and I'll do my best to get it to you :)
eblume said: If you use FuBar, you will need to get an additional Addon called Broker2Fubar to have Babel show up in FuBar. This is because FuBar does not natively support LibDataBroker, which is the emerging DeFacto standard for providing clickable launchers such as Babel. In the past, this addon was known as FuBar_BabelFu, but my interests have shifted and I no longer wish to use FuBar exclusively to display my data objects.
I updated. That's when it broke, because the old mod that this one replaced was called Babel FuBar_BabelFu. I fully expected this mod to include FuBar functionality, since that's what it used to be.
It was irresponsible of you to take a mod that used to specifically work with FuBar and just decide that you weren't going to maintain the old functionality, and then not document it.
Given that the old version of Babel FuBar_BabelFu works just fine, is there a reason to even update to yours?
Actually, to those of you who aren't seeing Babel show up - are you using the Curse Client? And if so, please check your AddOns folder to make certain that a "Babel" folder exists there. I'm tracking down a bug where it might be the case that switching to the name "Babel" is causing the Curse Client to not install the addon correctly.
Thanks for your concerns, everyone. Rest assured I am paying attention, some real life issues prevented me from responding until now.

I will make the primary page documentation make this more explicit.
The upcoming 1.1 release will also re-introduce the ability to set only specific communication modes to be moderated by Babel.
Also, I am interested in hearing about people who find that Babel doesn't remember which language you had last selected. In theory, it should be saving that value between sessions. I also have that behavior. Please provide more information, including steps to reproduce. You can also use the "See tickets on CurseForge" link to file a support request ticket.
Not much to reproduce. It just defaults to the race standard language exept on Draenei (haven't checked Horde). When I search through my WTF folder I only find 1 babel.lua. All it says in it is: BabelFuDB = nil
If there is anything else you need from me or something I can test give me a message :-)
On Nightelves Babel defaults to Darnassian.
I think it's their "1" language.
Can you please change it to either have every race start with common/orcish or that I can choose the default language.
This is happening to all races. Night elves default to Darnassian, dwarves to etc.
Several of us have now tried to add it to FuBar also and it doesn't work.
I reverted back to the Release version of Babel FuBar_BabelFu (9/29/2008) and it works just fine. I suggest reverting to this version and taking this particular mod out of Curse's automatic update process.
come back babel, my demon hunter needs you :(
Belated heads-up, got it to work just fine. No idea what was the problem the first time. Thanks!

I found the solution on the ticket system: http://www.wowace.com/addons/babel/tickets/1-langauge-settings-not-saved/
Quote: " ... Babel.toc the line with savedvariables still says BabelFuDB instead of BabelDB ..."
Thanks MugenJuri for the solution.

On Dreanei it won't save the language either, but the default is common instead of their own language.

Yes, all out of date mods are enabled. I have no problem with other FuBar mods (Elephant, AtlasLootFu, BagFu).
You need Broker2FuBar.
Happy speaking!
At this point, please ask if you want any more functionality.
Thanks Rieriebie, I'll try and get it off the ground again... I had moved on to other projects (such as school).
Hey, I really loved this addon in tbc, any chance you could make a version that works in wrath. pretty please :)
