Character Notes
Overview
Character Notes allows you to set and manage notes on other player's characters. Notes are stored per realm so notes are shared across your characters on a realm. Notes can be set on any character name. The notes are simple and generic and are not tied to a friend, an ignored character, etc.
Notes are displayed:
- When that character logs on
- When you do a /who on that character
- In unit tooltips
- Optionally as a hyperlink in chat
- From a command line interface
- From a GUI interface
Notes can be set and managed:
- By right-clicking on a unit frame
- Right clicking a name in chat or in the friends list
- From a command line interface
- From a GUI interface
- LDB launcher to bring up the GUI interface
- Minimap button to bring up the GUI interface
Additional Features
Character Notes can use LibAlts to get main-alt information. If no note is found for a character but one is found for the main of that character, it will display the note for the main.
Notes can be stored for characters not from your server but you'll need to use /editnote or the "Edit Note" menu item due to the spaces in the name (from the server name added at the end).
Note Links will add a hyperlink in chat next to any player name that you have set a note for. Clicking the "note" link will display the note in a tooltip.
Command-line options
- /notes - Brings up the GUI
- /searchnote - Brings up the GUI. Optional search term allows filtering the list of notes.
- /setnote Sets a note for the character name specified.
- /delnote Deletes the note for the character name specified.
- /getnote Prints the note for the character name specified.
- /editnote Brings up a window to edit the note for the name specified or your target if no name if specified.
Import / Export
Via the interface options or command line you can initiate an export or import of notes.
Exported notes can be used in spreadsheets, other applications, or imported into this
addon. The export is in the comma-separated value (CSV) format. If you choose to Escape values, it will put double quotes around text fields.
You can also import notes into the addon. This feature can result in data loss. Backup
your data (the Saved Variables) before importing in case you need to restore your data if
anything goes wrong. You can find the file at <WoW-Folder>\<flavor>\WTF\Account\<account>\Saved Variables\CharacterNotes.lua. Flavor is the game type such as _retail_ or _classic_.
In order to import notes from this addon, when you export you must select all fields and turn on Escape? values. Any spaces or newlines in a note will cause issues and possible corrupt the import. Escaping the values will preserve the data.
A preview window shows what will be imported giving you a chance to verify the data
looks correct. By default the addon will not overwrite existing data. If you wish to overwrite existing notes, then toggle the Overwrite Existing option.
Updating from 5.4
As a part of virtual realms, Blizzard changed the format of character names that include the server. Previously, the name and server were separated by a space, a dash, then a space. Now it will just be a dash. Character Notes could store notes for characters from other servers but it used the older format. When you first run version 2.2+ it should find and update any of these older "cross-server" names. Going forward, all names will use the newer format though.
Just waiting for the Import feature.
Seems to be functional in Classic. Very much appreciated.
To fix the Problem that the Menu is diabled, change the following line and remove dist = 0 in line 1607:

I added CHAT_ROSTER to the Menu list, so it's appear in the channel list too.
When right click player link in chat windows to add notes, it won't add the realm name if the player was no longer in the party.
Also is it possible to enter player name directly to add notes?
I use this for suppliers and stuff. I may be missing it but it would be nice to have a way to whisper and invite based upon the note's character.
I mention this because some of my notes have weird characters in them and then I have to try all the versions to find the guy.
All I want is to be able to add & see notes to my friends list.. to make a note of who some rando is & why i added them..
Can this do that ?
The new Twitter functionality is broken by add-ons that hook the chat frames to add functionality. Character Notes does that to add the note links in chat. If you want to use the Twitter icon to send a tweet, you need to disable that functionality. You can disable it by going in to the Character Notes settings, and unchecking Note Links in the Note Display section.
You have three options though:
If I find a fix for the issue, I'll put out a new release. It may be that Blizzard needs to fix it though.
Hey, how difficult Talryn is to have it displayed with a small icon in the friends list and in the guild mates list? It will be nice to have there, more convenient to add notes to various ppl and see them at once. Is that possible?
More interested in the Guild Mates list, as for Friends list there is Blizzard Notes system but for Guild Mates exist only if you are an officer and not your personal one.
In the past there was an addon that did that, Notesuneed but its not being updated for some time now. I don't know if the problem is Blizzard changes and the fact that dont allow it anymore.
Thank you for your time
I can look into it although requests like these should probably be tickets.
I avoided such things since Blizzard UI changes always breaks them at some point. You can usually do these sort of changes but Blizzard obviously doesn't worry about changing the UI and breaking add-ons.
You're suggesting an icon on the friend or guild lists that you can click or mouseover? I take it based on what you're suggesting you want it clickable and to bring up the window to set a note on that character.
The guild list is fairly compact so that one may be difficult. You can right click on people in the list. I could add an option there to edit a note for them.
The friends list has a little room although it would have to be before the game and invite icons on the right side. I'd prefer to not change the Blizzard UI more than needed.
Both of those windows have separate drop down menus when you right click them so they don't show Character Notes' Edit Note menu item you see if you right click on a name in chat or on a player target.
Usually the menu items are a better approach since that is less likely to break in future patches.
To show the note in the friend list would be nice too.
Hello. Great Addon and I love using it. I have one question tho. I was wondering where the information goes when I export it? I cannot find it on my computer, so just wondering what the default location is to look for. I'm on a mac btw. Thank you.
The export feature just puts the export data into the text box on the export screen. You will need to copy that data. You'll want the data highlighted. On a Mac, you can do that by holding down the command/Apple key and pressing A. You then need to copy it by holding down the command/Apple key and pressing C. You can then paste it somewhere by holding down the command/Apple key and pressing V.
Using Player Notes breaks the Dungeon Journal. I can not expand headings.
Hi, I have no problem expanding the headings in the Dungeon Journal. I'm not sure how the addon would even affect that. Have you tried only running Character Notes and seeing if the problem continues? Are you using the latest version? As of today, it would be 2.2.
Seems to be working now. Maybe it was a one-off glitch.
