SilverDragon - Rare Scanner
SilverDragon
SilverDragon tracks rares in World of Warcraft. It will try everything possible to notice them and tell you about them.
How does it search?
Vignettes
Those little skull icons you see on the minimap. If one of them is a rare SilverDragon knows about, it'll yell at you.
Targets
If you mouse over or target a rare mob, SilverDragon will notice it.
Nameplates
If you have enemy nameplates turned on, SilverDragon will keep an eye on them to look for the names of known rares.
Macro
SilverDragon can also create a macro to target any rares that are known in the current zone. You can stick this on your actionbars as a button to spam while chasing after a rare, or bind it to a key. This is sort of a last resort.
Chat
Some rares yell in zone chat. If SilverDragon notices those yells, it'll alert you.
Dark Magic
This abuses detection of when Blizzard blocks attempts to call a protected function (TargetUnit
) to work out when you're in targetting range of a unit with a given name
This inherently causes in-game errors, so it is disabled by default. Enable in the addon config under Scanning / Dark Magic
.
By default it's less-aggressive, scanning through rares in the zone without known vignettes at a rate of 1/second. However, you can turn that rate way up if you'd like. You can also turn on an option to automatically hide the error messages it causes, but beware that this will potentially cause taint issues that'll leave you needing to /reload
eventually.
How will I know when a rare is seen?
Frame
When a rare appears, SilverDragon will pop up a frame that you can click on to target it.
Warning: If you're in combat, secure action restrictions mean that it won't show up until combat finishes.
Sounds
You can choose from assorted sounds to play when a rare is seen. The sound can loop for a while, to make sure you don't miss it.
There's special settings for rares that drop mounts and world boss rares which you might want to call up a group for. If you're sitting mostly-AFK on a Time-Lost Proto Drake spawn, you probably want the sound that plays to be utterly ridiculous and go on for a good long while, to make sure you don't miss that sucker.
Messages
A notice can be sent to a number of places:
- your scrolling combat text
- your chat frame
- a channel in your chat frame (announcing it to your party, for instance)
- a popup window
- etc
History
A log of seen rares will be shown in a window, so you can easily glance over spawn times.
Other useful things?
Custom mobs
In SilverDragon's options you'll find a "Mobs" section. In the "Always" section, you can add any mob you want to be scanned for. All you need to know is the mob id.
So, let's say you wanted to keep an eye out for Lil Timmy in Stormwind, to buy the kitten he sells. You would...
- Go to his wowhead page.
- Grab his id from the URL. It's
8666
. - Enter
8666
into the "add" field, and click "okay". - Play with your new kitten.
Yes, this example dates me.
Ignoring mobs
If there's some mob you don't want to hear about for whatever reason, just go to the "Ignore" section of the options. Again, enter the mob's id into the "add" box, then click okay. Bam! You will never again be told that Vern is up.
(Actually, Vern is ignored by default. But you get the idea.)
Alternately, right-click the close button for the popup and that'll ignore it as well.
Syncs
SilverDragon will talk to itself. It can communicate with other copies of itself run by people in your party / guild, and tell you when they see a rare mob. (If there's a group of you camping all the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns, say...)
You can turn this off completely, if you want to be private about it.
Tooltips
Some rares are part of an achievement. When you mouse over a rare mob, SilverDragon will add to the tooltip whether you've already killed it, so you know whether you need to rush for it.
Broker
SilverDragon includes a Broker plugin. It'll attach itself to the addon compartment and also your minimap, or a Broker container you have installed, and show you a list of the mobs it knows about in the current zone.
Other addons you may find useful
- AppearanceTooltip: integrates with the SilverDragon loot popups and shows transmog-known status.
- ServerRestartSound: plays a sound when the server's about to restart. If you're AFK-camping for a rare spawn, you probably want to know about this.
- ObjectScanner: A few rares are hidden away behind interacting with world-objects like the Edge of Reality. These have to be localized individually, so you need to work out what they're called in your language and set up a watch for tooltips mentioning them. This addon does that bit.
- ButtonBin: a broker display. SilverDragon's minimap icon will show up on it (or any other addon like it) instead of cluttering up your minimap, if you have it installed.
I have most announcement filters unchecked, but I'm still getting alerts in Draenor for "boring" rares, e.g. character has collected all loot/appearance, drops a trinket, needed for achievement I already have etc. The test buttons seem to work. I don't want to have to go in and manually ignore all the rares I'm not interested in. Is there some setting I'm missing?
not showing up on some characters, any fix?
Is it possible to disable notifications for rares that would only give you reputation/renown for a faction that you already have maxed?
The only rares that have icons in Undermine are Gallagio and Darkfuse. I've tried resetting map overlay and any "hidden" mobs - still only shows the two rares.
In reply to Certhx23: The commonality there is that those are the only two who drop a mount, so maybe you've set things up to *only* tell you about rares with mounts?
Can you implement a change to the curiosities frame level? The addon has them at FrameLevel=5, but Elvui's map is at 10, so the curiosities don't show when using Elvui. Just increasing the FrameLevel allows them to show on Elvui's map.
In reply to RevengeOfDivinity: Check out the newest version -- I've changed it so that the framelevel is set the same way HandyNotes does it, so I think it'll be more likely to work with people who're changing the UI up a lot.
Hello, I have a question regarding an adjustment to the addon. Would it be possible to change the old silver dragon rare symbol to the new elite dragon (new dragondflight UI), or to make it available as an option?
In reply to RathianD14494: For the map icons? If you go to the settings for "map overlay" and change the "icon settings" theme to "stars", I think that'll do what you want.
I haven't tweaked the scale on those since they changed the icons, so I should probably do that.
Would be nice to show possible drops(Im on wow anniversary, maybe show on otheres)
I must admit, my IQ must be around room temperature for i simply cannot find a way to make the rare notification QUIET, its insanely loud, please help this poor simpleton save his eardrums
In reply to ButtermilkRanch3: They are linked to the main audio settings for the game. The addon settings just let you attach to the settings of the audio channel of choice like Master, Music, Dialog, etc
In reply to RealitySand: Yeah, addons outright *cannot* set specific volume levels for a sound they play. All we can do is give the tools to let you choose.
Is there any way the new ping system could be implemented as raid markers? This would be extremely useful because when you fly by a mob, it disappears when you leave the area. With a ping you would be able to see in which general direction you need to fly back to see it. Thank you!
I've been playing WoW since day one and just started using this addon. Didn't know what I was missing! If I had one request it would be to have a toggle to expand the history window upward instead of downward. Keep up the good work!
Hi, is there a way to hide rares that neither drop mounts nor used in any achievement? Even after playing with settings I keep getting popups about rares that even drop nothing. The only green line in these popups is "quest not completed". Which I guess is the line for rares who drop any loot once per day? So pls tell me how to hide empty rares.
I’m having problems with my game suddenly not recognising that I have SD installed - I’ve tried uninstalling/reinstalling a few times with reloads and game closes inbetween to no luck. The only change I can think of is downloading handynotes about a week before the issue popped up so I gave that a quick uninstall to see if that helped with the problem and it didn’t make a difference. I can’t access SD through my settings or my minimap and it doesn’t show up in my addons tracker either.
I’m unsure what I’ve done since Wednesday to have brought this on and I haven’t the slightest clue where to start on fixing it, but since I can’t find a single other post/comment about this happening anywhere else I figure I’ve gone a bit wrong somewhere!
Any help at all would be appreciated, I’ll try just about anything, missing my little pop ups during rare hunts
I'm looking at the huge tooltip/popup window that SilverDragon shows when you hover over the icon on the mounts collection screen. I'm curious about the information shown in these columns of this tooltip.
Specifically, right after the Last Seen column, some of the rows have a little icon shown there. What is this icon? There seems to be 6 or 7 different icons, but honestly they are too small to make out. I'm just wondering what this icon means.
Also some of the rows in this tooltip are blue. Most are orange but a few are blue. What does this mean?
Basically I guess it would be nice to have a brief paragraph or two that describes the data shown in this table. Why do some rows appear different from others, and what are all te arious icons. Etc Etc. ;-)
Is there any way to have the addon scan different mobs on different toons? I have tried changing profiles and the mob info stays the same. I want to be able to just have a few toons track rares for the collectibles and my main be able to track all of them.
Options is no showing for any of my characters
