SilverDragon - Rare Scanner
SilverDragon
SilverDragon tracks rares in World of Warcraft. It will try everything possible to notice them and tell you about them.
How does it search?
Vignettes
Those little skull icons you see on the minimap. If one of them is a rare SilverDragon knows about, it'll yell at you.
Targets
If you mouse over or target a rare mob, SilverDragon will notice it.
Nameplates
If you have enemy nameplates turned on, SilverDragon will keep an eye on them to look for the names of known rares.
Macro
SilverDragon can also create a macro to target any rares that are known in the current zone. You can stick this on your actionbars as a button to spam while chasing after a rare, or bind it to a key. This is sort of a last resort.
Chat
Some rares yell in zone chat. If SilverDragon notices those yells, it'll alert you.
Dark Magic
This abuses detection of when Blizzard blocks attempts to call a protected function (TargetUnit
) to work out when you're in targetting range of a unit with a given name
This inherently causes in-game errors, so it is disabled by default. Enable in the addon config under Scanning / Dark Magic
.
By default it's less-aggressive, scanning through rares in the zone without known vignettes at a rate of 1/second. However, you can turn that rate way up if you'd like. You can also turn on an option to automatically hide the error messages it causes, but beware that this will potentially cause taint issues that'll leave you needing to /reload
eventually.
How will I know when a rare is seen?
Frame
When a rare appears, SilverDragon will pop up a frame that you can click on to target it.
Warning: If you're in combat, secure action restrictions mean that it won't show up until combat finishes.
Sounds
You can choose from assorted sounds to play when a rare is seen. The sound can loop for a while, to make sure you don't miss it.
There's special settings for rares that drop mounts and world boss rares which you might want to call up a group for. If you're sitting mostly-AFK on a Time-Lost Proto Drake spawn, you probably want the sound that plays to be utterly ridiculous and go on for a good long while, to make sure you don't miss that sucker.
Messages
A notice can be sent to a number of places:
- your scrolling combat text
- your chat frame
- a channel in your chat frame (announcing it to your party, for instance)
- a popup window
- etc
History
A log of seen rares will be shown in a window, so you can easily glance over spawn times.
Other useful things?
Custom mobs
In SilverDragon's options you'll find a "Mobs" section. In the "Always" section, you can add any mob you want to be scanned for. All you need to know is the mob id.
So, let's say you wanted to keep an eye out for Lil Timmy in Stormwind, to buy the kitten he sells. You would...
- Go to his wowhead page.
- Grab his id from the URL. It's
8666
. - Enter
8666
into the "add" field, and click "okay". - Play with your new kitten.
Yes, this example dates me.
Ignoring mobs
If there's some mob you don't want to hear about for whatever reason, just go to the "Ignore" section of the options. Again, enter the mob's id into the "add" box, then click okay. Bam! You will never again be told that Vern is up.
(Actually, Vern is ignored by default. But you get the idea.)
Alternately, right-click the close button for the popup and that'll ignore it as well.
Syncs
SilverDragon will talk to itself. It can communicate with other copies of itself run by people in your party / guild, and tell you when they see a rare mob. (If there's a group of you camping all the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns, say...)
You can turn this off completely, if you want to be private about it.
Tooltips
Some rares are part of an achievement. When you mouse over a rare mob, SilverDragon will add to the tooltip whether you've already killed it, so you know whether you need to rush for it.
Broker
SilverDragon includes a Broker plugin. It'll attach itself to the addon compartment and also your minimap, or a Broker container you have installed, and show you a list of the mobs it knows about in the current zone.
Other addons you may find useful
- AppearanceTooltip: integrates with the SilverDragon loot popups and shows transmog-known status.
- ServerRestartSound: plays a sound when the server's about to restart. If you're AFK-camping for a rare spawn, you probably want to know about this.
- ObjectScanner: A few rares are hidden away behind interacting with world-objects like the Edge of Reality. These have to be localized individually, so you need to work out what they're called in your language and set up a watch for tooltips mentioning them. This addon does that bit.
- ButtonBin: a broker display. SilverDragon's minimap icon will show up on it (or any other addon like it) instead of cluttering up your minimap, if you have it installed.
In reply to Kemayo:
hey Kemayo, I just had the same problem, with Breezebiter (a rare in Azure Span that has a low drop mount). Someone had tagged the rare and it ran past me while i was mounted. He was dragged into a cave and i targeted him and helped kill him. Dont know why silverdragon did not detect the nameplate/mouseover/target before i even attacked him? Only after he was killed did the silverdragon popup get displayed and then i got 10 repeats of "You are not prepared" with drums in the background (my setting to get a warning if i am afk). By that time he was already dead. I normally stand in front of his spawn spot at the cave entrance and go afk waiting for the alert to sound if he spawns. He will attack me and put me in combat in that position when he spawns, which probably explains why i missed a spawn sound alert earlier today while i was afk but in combat.I suggest that you do immediately pop the alert window when a nearby rare is detected by nameplate/target/mouseover and immediately start the sound alert so that I can get back to my keyboard fast before it is killed. Just disable the target ability on the popup if in combat, but still pop the alert window and play the sounds immediately, so that a spawn, kill and mount drop is not missed, thanks! :).
You have one of the rares in the incorrect location: https://www.wowhead.com/npc=193134/enkine-the-voracious
In reply to notanotherforumname:
Oh, yeah, that one has been fixed in the alphas for a few days -- I'll get a proper release out with it shortly.
In reply to Kemayo:Also this https://www.wowhead.com/npc=193175/slurpo-the-incredible-snail
Where's the option to hide the Last Seen, ID and Location on the map tooltips? these bits of information are useless to me.
I have 'Unit ID' unticked under General > Tooltips yet I still see the ID's.
Actually after combing through the settings, I can see that there are no options to disable these bits of information. The 'Unit ID' option under tooltips are only for the physical NPC tooltip, not the map.
Would it be possible to add them?
Thanks o/
In reply to Zakarie:
It should only be showing the id if you're in debug mode, which itself should only be if you're using a git checkout of the addon -- are you? If not, I have to dig into some things to work out why that's triggering...
In reply to Kemayo:
Unsure tbh, I've been updating entirely through Curseforge but I might have swapped to a git model when Wowup got a bit wonky.
I went ahead and deleted the addon, removed all saved variables and reinstalled through Curseforge. The Unit ID, Last Seen and Location still show on map tooltips.
Also can you explain what "Quests: Incomplete" mean? is that when you can kill them daily?
I'm getting a message saying "You have an old Silverdragon_Dragonflight folder...". I can't find any folder that it might be referring to. If I delete the one in data called "Dragonflight" the message goes away but it obviously won't scan rares in Dragonflight since the data is gone.
Is the message just a bug or am I missing something?

In reply to TheZonk88:
Thanks, I posted before that issue was raised so that's why I didn't see it.
Love this addon, very helpful for Zerith Morris....but I am having some troubles with Vale of Eternal Blossoms minor assaults...it used to filter the available mounts based on the active assault...but right now Assault: Black Empire is up and it showing Ha-Li, Rei Lun, Houdlord Ren and Anh-De the Loyal available....but they are only available during the Mogu assault. (had a similar issue when Mogu was up, the addon wasn't showing that those were available, but they were).....maybe it is offset by a bit?
In reply to czarl:
I see your reply below..gues you are working on it
It looks like the thing I was keying the display off has changed -- there used to be continent-level icons showing which assault was active, and those are gone now. I need to work out a different thing to check for instead.
In reply to czarl:
Yeah, it should be fixed as of the last release.
In reply to Kemayo:
yep...just noticed it was fixed....that was the "easy" part....now I gotta get those Ha-Li / Re Lun drops
thank you
In reply to czarl:
looks like it is broken again? Currently Assault: The Endless Swarm (Mantid invasion?) is up,
but SD is showing that Houndload / Rei Lun / Ha-Li and Anh-de the loyal are available, but those are only avail during the minor invasion Mogu Assault
it is possible I have the wrong information...still trying to figure out these major/minor invasions..I am a mount hunter, so really only interested in the Mogu Assault :-)
Just a loot correction. The "Shade of grief" rare does not drop the horned jaw customisation. It drops the branched horns customsiation instead.
In reply to notanotherforumname:
It can drop either. The customizations actually drop fairly widely spread across different rares -- I might need to pull them out of loot pools for just being too common and unrestricted. I'm waiting to see what broad statistics we get on loot from wowhead now the masses have been unleashed on the question...
hello. XCT add-on and Silverdragon add-on conflict. Can you help me? thank you
In reply to jusuya:
Not sure what's going on with that -- if anything it's a conflict with LibSink-2.0. I'd suspect that anything that needs to be done to fix this would be on XCT's side, since whatever is happening is deep within the combat text.
No longer shows the rares on the map during N'zoth assaults in Uldum or the Vale.
