TankPoints
TankPoints 2.0 - A benchmark for survivalbility gear
About TankPoints
TankPoints was created to help myself compare different pieces of tanking gear, because it was difficult to decided at a glance like whether 12 defense is better then 1 dodge.
TankPoints can be seen as how much damage you can take before damage reduction, it considers your max health, armor, defense, dodge, parry, block, block value, resilience, crushing blow chance, miss, crit reduction, talants, buffs, stance/forms, and more.
Keep in mind though, that higher TankPoints does not make a better tank, it is only a benchmark for survivalbility gear but does not calculate threat. It can not decide for you what you should wear for what boss, but it can provide you with a wealth of information what will hopfully be useful for choosing gear.
About TankPoints 2.0
TankPoints 2.0 is a complete rewrite of my original TankPoints for WoW 2.0 using the Ace2 framework.
It has a much improved TankPoints algorithm, intergrates nicely into the character stats dropdown menu, and shows a lot more information then the original TankPoints.
2.0 introduced a new combat ratings system which made it even harder to compare gear, in order to code combat rating support for TankPoints, the exact rating to percentage formula is required which Blizzard didn't give us. Luckly, I have suceessfully reverse engineered the rating formula for all levels and coded an addon called "Rating Buster" that converts ratings on item tooltips into percentages, you can try it out here.
Rating Buster: http://wow.curse-gaming.com/en/files/details/4991/rating-buster/
How to use
Gravity has writen an awesome 7 page guide to using TankPoints on his blog: http://pwnwear.com/tankpoints-user-guide/
The value of Block
The value is Shield Block Value and Block Rating is highly dependent on what you are tanking.
Its very good for mobs that don't hit very hard like in heroics, but is worth much less on hard hitting bosses in 25 man raids.
At level 80, TankPoints' default mob damage is tuned to 25 man raids, with a value of 24365 damage before mitigation.
You can change this value to match what you plan on tanking by using the "/tp mob damage" command in game.
A mob damage of 10505 for example is a good value for level 80 heroics.
TankPoints also calculates the value of Shield Block for Warriors, and Holy Shield for Paladins.
You can use the "/tp player sbfreq" command to set a shield block frequency that matches your rotation (in how many seconds AFTER cooldown finishes).
For most tankadins rotations, you will have a 100% Holy Shield uptime, using "/tp player sbfreq 1" will tell TankPoints that you will use Holy Shield 1 second after cooldown finishes (every 9 secs)
TankPoints 2.0 Features
Imporved TankPoints 2.0 formula
- Support for all combat ratings including the new resilience stat
- Support for block% and block value
- Support for crushing blows
- Support for combat table and correctly caps off at a total of 100%.
Using Hit < Crushing < Crit < Block < Parry < Dodge < Miss - Support for mob stats:
- Mob level - defaults player level 3
- Mob damage
- Mob melee crit chance
- Mob melee crit bonus
- Mob melee miss chance
- Mob spell crit chance
- Mob spell crit bonus
- Mob spell miss chance
Improved TankPoints Calculator
TankPoints User Interface
- Intergrated in to the Character stats dropdown menu (See Screeshots)
- When TankPoints is selected it displays:
- TankPoints
- Melee Damage Reduction
- Block Value
- Spell TankPoints
- Spell Damage Reduction
- TankPoints tooltip:
- Your stance
- Mob Stats
- Mob Level
- Mob Damage (after damage reduction)
- Mob Crit Chance
- Mob Miss Chance
- TankPoints per StatValue - Shows how much TankPoints you gain for each stats with equal item values, because the values below are equal in the item value formula, you can use this data to see what gives the most bang for the buck in terms of item budgets.
- 1 Agility =
- 1.5 Stamina =
- 10 Armor =
- 1 Resilience =
- 1 Defense Rating =
- 1 Dodge Rating =
- 1 Parry Rating =
- 1 Block Rating =
- 1.54 Block Value
- Option to hold down ALT key will show how much TankPoints you gain for each stat point
- 1 Agility
- 1 Stamina
- 1 Armor
- 1 Resilience
- 1% Defense
- 1% Dodge
- 1% Parry
- 1% Block
- 1 Block Value
- Melee Damage Reduction tooltip:
- Armor Damage Reduction against mob level - Useful because the default armor tooltip only shows the reduction for the same level
- Mob Level, Player Level
- Combat Table - Hit < Crushing < Crit < Block < Parry < Dodge < Miss. The total of these chances must be capped at 100%, if you exceed 100% then lower priority values will be pushed off the table. For example, when you press shield block ( 75% block chance), hit, crush and crit will all be pushed off and will be 0, your real block chance will also be capped at (100% - Parry% - Dodge% - Miss%)
- Block Value tooltip - Block Value should have been included in the default UI, but they didn't so I coded my own function that does it, strength, items, talents(warrior, paladin, shaman) are all considered in the algorithm.
- Mob Damage before Damage Reduction (armor and stance effects)
- Mob Damage after Damage Reduction
- Blocked percentage
- Block Value / Mob Damage after DR
- Block Chance
- Equivalent Block Mitigation
- Block Chance * Blocked percentage:
This can be seen equal with the same amount of dodge or parry.
- Spell TankPoints Tooltip - Shows your strongest school by default
- Your stance
- TankPoints at the following Melee/Spell Damage Ratio
- 25% Melee Damage 75% <school> damage
- 50% Melee Damage 50% <school> damage
- 75% Melee Damage 25% <school> damage
- Can manually cycle through all schools by left clicking the stat
- Reset back to showing the strongest school by right click the stat
- Spell Damage Reduction - Shows your strongest school by default
- Shows damage reductions for all schools
- Same click functions as the Spell TankPoints Tooltip

@boettchi You may want to look up the addon RatingBuster. It sounds like it might have more of what you are looking for.
Hi Whitetooth,
first of all, great Addon.
I'm playing a rogue, not a warrior, so i use this adon to check my equipment and have a look what will change if i add some points here and there.
its a nice Benchmark, but perhaps you can add opportunities for changing more values like chance to hit, critchance and Atackpower...
and .. perhaps valuechanges depending on the players Class.
Bo

mh the newest version dont shows the correct points in the tooltips :-/ german client
Just want to say "Thank you, whitetooth!".
This is a must have for every serious tank imho. You developed a very useful and smart benchmark. The introduction of item comparison via tooltips some versions ago was another great step - I like it alot.
Keep up the good work ;-)
@Whitetooth
thx for your answer. i have made somes huges step in the french translation of statlogic, so its not needed to revert the blockvalue code.
I will post somes translation parts today at the main Ace forum, because its more code friendly :) )
@Whitetooth
Thanks for the resply, i understand. Question now still stands, why when/if you increase your Agility, your chance to crit does not increase? (I'm a DPS warrior, so i'd like to be able to use TP to calculate increases in CRIT etc before getting enchants etc)
Regards, Cami
@camiliosardinha The Combat Table in TankPoints Calculator is the Defensive Combat Table, not Offensive. Crit is your chance to BE crit by the mob not your chance to crit the mob :)
@ryanmsean, AbbedieD I want to take this opportunity to talk a little more about TankPoints.
TankPoints is not mearly a meaning less benchmark value like other wow item benchmarks.
I designed and developed the TankPoints formula and addon over 2 years ago, its designed as a dynamic points system, calculated mathamatically using well known game dynamics.
That is, it calculates how many points each stat is worth according to your current gear setup, it does so to help you obtain the best balance between all "defensive stats".
For one person, TankPoints may say that 1 Stamina is worth more points then 1 Defense Rating, but for another tank that has a too much Stamina it will show that 1 Defense Rating is worth more then 1 Stamina. Point values are not static and is custom for your current gear and stat.
TankPoints is directly proportional to how long a given opponent takes to kill you, which is known as survivability or time to live in some articles. The more TankPoints you have means you will live longer without getting heals, this is very important to healers because it means how much time you give the healers between heals, to the healer this is directly related to how eazy it is to heal you.
Most people think that TankPoints(survivability or time to live) doesn't consider healers mana, and only think that having high total reduction can save healers mana. But thats not true, having high TankPoints can help healers regen mana, because the more time your healers have between heals the more mana they can regen.
@camiliosardinha When you increase your agility, your dodge increases and your chance to get hit decreses. Its the same idea with defense. If you like to read more about how the WoW combat table works: http://www.wowwiki.com/Attack_table
It is not better or worser. It depends on your gear and your stats. Do you have to low avoidance? Socket dodge or maybe def. Is your HP und 12k? Socket stam.
No Addon can make the decision for you what you need. it only can give advices. Most (not all) tanks choose between 2 ways. Push your armor and hp at the maximum. Or go at maximum avoidance. It has much to do with your preferences and the encounter you want to tank. Maybe ask your healers what is better for them.
No one says you must get the Tankpointsnumber as high as posible. It is only a guideline.
A rough estimate is better than no estimate at all? :) I wouldnt base my choices for gear on TP alone as this addon can only be as accurate as the results of the reverse engineering are. For druids there are a lot of multiplicative effects on stamina, so my actual TankPoints are sometimes incorrect while my melee DR is usually accurate - therefore i prefer to have two sets of gear anyway: one with focus on raw mitigation/hp (armor/sta) and one for total melee DR. I dont look at stamina for the melee DR set (unless i'm running really low) and dont look at total reduction for the raw mitigation set (the info about armor reduction is usually correct).
But i noticed that the Blizzard UI sometimes forgets about enchants on gear and therefore TP can change while switching item sets forth and back. Thats no TP issue though if you ask me :)
so it means nothing in real world testing?
for example +12 defense rating adds more tankpoints than +12 stamina but I hear by everyone that +12 stamina is better for tanking.
In 2.6.0 from 2.5.7 my tankpoints went down from 52,000 to 49,000 and listed in the tooltip my miss/dodge/parry/block %'s went down by about 0.5 from blizzard's defenses pane, just wondering what caused this.
Also the number you use for tankpoints, will an increase in that number increase your time to live or what does an increase in the number mean?
Your parry dodge and block went down because the tooltip now seems to be for a lvl 73 mob. Open the calulator and lower the moblevel to 70. The your values are the same like in the blizzard ui (i have a 0,01% difference dont know why).
The Tankpointsnumber maybe is explainable with a benchmarkresult for tanking gear. Not more and not less.
Was my mistake. Combattable was for lvl73 ^^ With lvl 70 mob there is only 0,01% differenz between blizzard ui and combattable..
Hi Whitetooth I dont know for other language, but at least for frFR Tankpoint, the block value calculation doesnt works anymore. It returns only the blockfromstrength value. (tested in both live and ptr servers). a quick look in the function makes me think that TankPoint is searching only in active tembonus from Set.
PS: I still have the project to translate the statlogic lib, but its very difficult because some bonus are shown with a lot of different strings...
Maybe if it could be possible to bypass lower/upper char it could be easier...
for example
Score de d\195\169fense"] = {"CR_DEFENSE",}, score de d\195\169fense"] = {"CR_DEFENSE",}, ["au score de d\195\169fense"] = {"CR_DEFENSE",}, ["le score de d\195\169fense"] = {"CR_DEFENSE",}, ["votre score de d\195\169fense] = {"CR_DEFENSE",},
and i have to make a lot of deep pattern to handel that
["DeepScanPatterns"] = { "^(.-) ?%+(%d+) ?(.-)$", -- "xxx xxx +22" or "+22 xxx xxx" or "xxx +22 xxx" (scan 2ed) "^(.-) ?([%d%.]+) ?(.-)$", -- 22.22 xxx xxx (scan last) "^(.-) augment\195\169 de (%d+) ?(.-)$", "^Augmente (.-) de (%d+) ?(.-)$", --i have to cheat there because the last stat return must be blank "^Augmente (.-)de (%d+) ?(.-)$", --i have to cheat there because the first stat return must be blank "^.-: (.-)%+(%d+) ?(.-)$", --Bonus de sertissage : +3 xxx },
@Tixu 1. Sorry, I changed the GetBlockValue function to use StatLogic without thinking that the french client doesn't have a localized StatLogic yet, I think I'll change it back until its localized.
2. Yeah, I encountered the same problem in the English client, lots of same strings with different lower/upper cases, I think I'll add some code to bypass lower/upper case.
3. The 2 lines can be writen into one line: "^Augmente (.-) de (%d+) ?(.-)$", --i have to cheat there because the last stat return must be blank "^Augmente (.-)de (%d+) ?(.-)$", --i have to cheat there because the first stat return must be blank
->
"^Augmente (.-) ?de (%d+) ?(.-)$", --i have to cheat there because the last stat return must be blank
Its a good idea to fully understand "lua patterns" when localizing this part (http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/manual.html#5.4.1)
Thanks for your work!
Hi..
Why when you increase the amount of Agility in the calculator (/tp calc), it doesn't increase the +crit ?
And if u increase +agility, your +hit goes down.. wierd.. And if you increase your +defense, +hit and +crit goes down aswell..
I'm using 2.6.0
Thnx
2.6.0 - Calculator: Fixed MobLevel calculations - Better Talant and Buff support - Improved Block Value calculation - Code for smooth transition to 2.1.0 - Updated Libs
