Elephant
"Shoot... what did he say again? I just got disconnected."
"Didn't that folk already loot that rare item 10 minutes ago?"
"I really wish I could remember the name of the item linked on the guild chat yesterday at 9:00 PM."
...
Already been in one of these situations? Don't be annoyed anymore, here is the solution!
Solution to chat loss annoyance
Elephant logs the chat for you in the background even when you get disconnected. It saves the WHISPER & BATTLE.NET, RAID, INSTANCE & BATTLEGROUND, PARTY, GUILD, SAY, YELL and OFFICER chats separately, but also all general chats (General, Trade, LocalDefense, ...), custom chats you are currently on, achievements, loots and finally system messages (auctions, rolls, server going down, ...). You can easily go through all these logs, thanks to a straightforward interface displaying all the access buttons on the right side of the main window. You can access the options of the addon by typing /elephant and also bind a key to pop up the addon.
Elephant gives you the ability to copy up to 100,000 (yes, 100k) characters of logs to another application. A BBCode feature is even included, letting you copy/paste a chat with colors and links to an item database in a very quick and simple way to your favorite forum.
This is THE addon that you should install if you want to never forget what somebody told you in game. Be a pro of managing hell tells, go peacefully AFK for a few minutes, or be an awesome role player. Elephant is also perfectly designed for Guild Leaders, Officers and Raid Leaders particularly because it restores the chats after you've been disconnected.
Main features
- Logs the chats in the background, with a limit of 10,000 lines for each chat (Blizzard's default is 161 lines for everything).
- Saves the logs when you log out or get disconnected.
- Display the chats with timestamps, or using your Prat settings if you have it installed.
- Copy the chat and paste it in other applications (BBCode supported!), up to 100,000 characters.
- Save the chat and combat log in two different files on your computer (using the default Blizzard logging system).
Other features
- Use filters to avoid logging some of the custom channels you join.
- Enable/disable logging for each chat separately.
- Item links in logs are displayed in their proper color and are clickable.
- Player names in the main window are clickable.
- ...and much more!

I have uploaded the first release of the newly named ChatLog addon. Code is the same, only the name changes ;)
Then try to simply tick/untick the checkbox.
Beware that if you have another addon that manages the chat/combat logging, it may conflict with Elephant. For example: Prat. Try to simply disable logging in other addons (or in Elephant) and use the logging in only one addon.
Simply use the menu that appears when you right-click on the addon icon of the minimap or on the FuBar. You can also type /clog log max <number>
How do you change the log limit from 250 to 1000 lines of text?
It seems there is a bug when trying to display the Copy window. I'm working on it at the moment and the fix will be given in next release (next release will use the new name).
Note that no text will be printed in Logs/WoWChatLog.txt if you do not exit from the game before opening the file.
This addon is crucial for our guild's management. Enjoy it and look forward to Elephant.
Have recently had this behaviour--I go to any channel, the text shows up. I hit the copy button, and the window closes; before there was a window that came up and I could copy the text for pasting. There is no text in the WoWChatlog.txt file if i select the 'save to file' option. So far I've:
1) Deleted and reinstalled the mod, including the relevant files in the WTF folder--I did NOT delete the entire WTF folder.
2) Reset the new mod, including clearing the logs (made a backup first).
3) Tried with just that mod turned on at startup/login.
I have the latest version updateable from WoWAceUpdater.
Any thoughts?
I'd like to release 2.5.0, but the upload feature of Curse is quite bugged at the moment. So you'll have to wait for it or check http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info5423-ChatLog.html for an immediate download.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROJECT WILL BE RENAMED TO "Elephant" VERY SOON !!
A lot of work is made on ChatLog these days so stay tuned for some news ;-)
This is very strange. It shouldn't log this special channel if you disabled it. Does it appear with a tick besides its name in the menu or not?
no tick beside the channel but it still logs it
I have been useing this mod a long time but i have a problem that has just recently started. I am logging a couple of custom channels one of them i have off on all toons and it still logs it any ideas?
I will, in a near future. I'm thinking about writing v2.5 and I'll have to change how data is recorded to have an enhanced way to display it. On the way:
I don't have any release data, but I'm expecting to have a bit of time in the next weeks to work on it. At least, I hope so. No worries, I'm not ending support on ChatLog ;-)
I did check it but it dosent work. Im using this for a long time now but the file is still empty.
Secondly could you please add ths Chat or is there anything in wow prventing this? I think MANY people want to look ingame what happened in the last fight exactly. For Raidleaders this sometimes is essential. This would give your addon a really big boost I think.
OK here are the answers to your questions ;)
@ Gorkilein: The Combat Log is not saved atm in-game, but you can enable the combat log (I mean, saving the log to a file on your computer). Simply check the corresponding checkbox on the top right of the main window of ChatLog. Then, exit the game and look in your World of Warcraft/Logs folder. You'll find what you want there.
@ Serith: Same than above.
@ pepepe: It is impossible to save the log to a file while in game. It is an UI restriction and thus its behaviour cannot be changed by addon.
Hey, I am using this addon for a while now, and I think it's wonderful! I have one question however. i am saving the chatlogs to a file, but that seems to be only updated when I log out. So I am wondering where does it store the chatlog when ingame? I want to use that (text)file because I want to keep track of my whispers when I have minimized wow. If there is a textfile that's being updated realtime, I can let it show on my desktop and that way see who's whispering me while i'm doing other stuff xD
Let me know if you can help me out :p And ofc, keep up the good work xD

Have exactly same problem as Gorkilein, did not find how to see Combat Log in game. Is there any reason that makes combat log chat some how different from other chats?
I loaded this great addon primary to scroll back in the Combatlog after fights but the only Chat wich is not logged is the Combatlog.
There is no Combatlog button anywhere nor is there Combatlog under one of the buttons such as misc or general chat.
If I do activate the save to file option same. AND... the savefiles are empty as it seems (even after reloading the Interface).
When should they be saved and how do I look at the Combatlog ingame?
(German WOW Client)
The ChatLog button will be put back in next release. Much more improvements will be added, too.
Check http://www.wowace.com/wiki/ChatLog for mor informations.
I cannot provide you with a release date though.
Well...I haven't gotten any spam, recently, so that might be a bit hard to do... But I'll see what happens when I report try to report someone in Ironforge. I know "Report Spam" works on ANY name, or should... It has since I disabled ChatLog anyway. Maybe you can't report people when you're dead...'cause I WAS DEAD at the time this failed. But that doesn't make much sense, if you ask me.
EDIT: What can I say... You were absolutely right and I was absolutely wrong, mate. But that still doesn't explain why Blizzard won't let you report people for spam while you're dead... >_o In any case, this AddOn is working perfectly as stated. Sorry for the confusion!
There should be no problem on the "Report Spam" function. ChatLog does not change anything to this. I know it is a bit tricky to display this option: player needs to be near you, or he must spam on a general chat, or...
I have not seen any problem with ChatLog and the "Report Spam" function, but I maybe missed something. If you have a concrete example to show me I'd appreciate to see it :p
