SilverDragon - Rare Scanner
SilverDragon
SilverDragon tracks rares in World of Warcraft. It will try everything possible to notice them and tell you about them.
How does it search?
Vignettes
Those little skull icons you see on the minimap. If one of them is a rare SilverDragon knows about, it'll yell at you.
Targets
If you mouse over or target a rare mob, SilverDragon will notice it.
Nameplates
If you have enemy nameplates turned on, SilverDragon will keep an eye on them to look for the names of known rares.
Macro
SilverDragon can also create a macro to target any rares that are known in the current zone. You can stick this on your actionbars as a button to spam while chasing after a rare, or bind it to a key. This is sort of a last resort.
Chat
Some rares yell in zone chat. If SilverDragon notices those yells, it'll alert you.
Dark Magic
This abuses detection of when Blizzard blocks attempts to call a protected function (TargetUnit
) to work out when you're in targetting range of a unit with a given name
This inherently causes in-game errors, so it is disabled by default. Enable in the addon config under Scanning / Dark Magic
.
By default it's less-aggressive, scanning through rares in the zone without known vignettes at a rate of 1/second. However, you can turn that rate way up if you'd like. You can also turn on an option to automatically hide the error messages it causes, but beware that this will potentially cause taint issues that'll leave you needing to /reload
eventually.
How will I know when a rare is seen?
Frame
When a rare appears, SilverDragon will pop up a frame that you can click on to target it.
Warning: If you're in combat, secure action restrictions mean that it won't show up until combat finishes.
Sounds
You can choose from assorted sounds to play when a rare is seen. The sound can loop for a while, to make sure you don't miss it.
There's special settings for rares that drop mounts and world boss rares which you might want to call up a group for. If you're sitting mostly-AFK on a Time-Lost Proto Drake spawn, you probably want the sound that plays to be utterly ridiculous and go on for a good long while, to make sure you don't miss that sucker.
Messages
A notice can be sent to a number of places:
- your scrolling combat text
- your chat frame
- a channel in your chat frame (announcing it to your party, for instance)
- a popup window
- etc
History
A log of seen rares will be shown in a window, so you can easily glance over spawn times.
Other useful things?
Custom mobs
In SilverDragon's options you'll find a "Mobs" section. In the "Always" section, you can add any mob you want to be scanned for. All you need to know is the mob id.
So, let's say you wanted to keep an eye out for Lil Timmy in Stormwind, to buy the kitten he sells. You would...
- Go to his wowhead page.
- Grab his id from the URL. It's
8666
. - Enter
8666
into the "add" field, and click "okay". - Play with your new kitten.
Yes, this example dates me.
Ignoring mobs
If there's some mob you don't want to hear about for whatever reason, just go to the "Ignore" section of the options. Again, enter the mob's id into the "add" box, then click okay. Bam! You will never again be told that Vern is up.
(Actually, Vern is ignored by default. But you get the idea.)
Alternately, right-click the close button for the popup and that'll ignore it as well.
Syncs
SilverDragon will talk to itself. It can communicate with other copies of itself run by people in your party / guild, and tell you when they see a rare mob. (If there's a group of you camping all the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns, say...)
You can turn this off completely, if you want to be private about it.
Tooltips
Some rares are part of an achievement. When you mouse over a rare mob, SilverDragon will add to the tooltip whether you've already killed it, so you know whether you need to rush for it.
Broker
SilverDragon includes a Broker plugin. It'll attach itself to the addon compartment and also your minimap, or a Broker container you have installed, and show you a list of the mobs it knows about in the current zone.
Other addons you may find useful
- AppearanceTooltip: integrates with the SilverDragon loot popups and shows transmog-known status.
- ServerRestartSound: plays a sound when the server's about to restart. If you're AFK-camping for a rare spawn, you probably want to know about this.
- ObjectScanner: A few rares are hidden away behind interacting with world-objects like the Edge of Reality. These have to be localized individually, so you need to work out what they're called in your language and set up a watch for tooltips mentioning them. This addon does that bit.
- ButtonBin: a broker display. SilverDragon's minimap icon will show up on it (or any other addon like it) instead of cluttering up your minimap, if you have it installed.
I was going by "find them in the relevant expansion, uncheck them there". But you're right, that's a pain.
So, just uploaded an alpha, added an input box for add-to-ignore. Also, improved these input boxes so you can enter things like "target" / "mouseover" / the mob's name (for mobs we know about), so you don't have to look up the ID.
Found uninstalling Handynotes legion treasures and rares solves the unknown issue
...that's very strange, but thank you for letting me know. I guess I'd better download it and see if there's something obvious it's doing that might interfere.
Got a question after recent update (v4) and have noticed something in the last one or two weeks. All the rares have been reset (the unknown one shows up occasionally for myself as well). What irks me though is that the nameplate now doesn't autofade - after a kill it marks the picture with the X sign and simply remains there. Is there some change to an option to make it autofade again?
Also, is there some option I'm missing making the nameplate duplicate itself? I do have Handynotes installed, and so when a rare pops up I get two nameplates - one of which appears to be Silver's and the other Handy's? Is this something I should close? I admit to not being too savvy with what each option inside does despite looking... :(
Finally, I've been hunting Shattrath WoD rares and it seems that despite a rare being up in nameplate-scanning range, it doesn't show up until I physically move my char nearby to "check in". How do I expand/check the rangefinder nameplate is working? :)
I'd speculate that you have NPCScan installed as well, if you're getting two popups. Screenshots suggest that we're both using the in-game toast graphics, so it'd be hard to tell the difference.
Nameplate has never done any sort of automatic fading. I can look into adding that, since I agree it's a good idea.
For the scanning... "nameplate-scanning range" means being close enough that the actual health bar appears over the mob. Just being able to see its name doesn't count (you need the "plate" part as well). It's possible to tweak settings to extend this range, which is helpful for hunting rares. I can add something to silvedragon's settings for that, so it's easier to do...
Autofading would great if possible, esp after detecting a kill/dead mob. The manual clicking, while a minor grouse I admit and not a high priority, is just one of those very nice QoL things. :)
Yes, I do actually have NPCScan installed (it seems helpful for older zones like BC where I have yet to find all the rares). Is it something that's duplicated and I can uninstall that for Silver instead? :) For all I know something borked during some update and swapped them around, because I am certain *one* of these addons autofaded after noting a mob was dead.
Ahh I had thought that simply being "in range" of the mob to appear on-screen (or drawn into memory ready for loading) would be enough. That's... rather annoying (not your fault!) when you're cruising and looking for rares though :(
Not sure exactly what NPCscan includes at the moment, but SD certainly includes basically-every-rare from previous expansions. Certainly, everything from BC/Wrath/etc.
The in-range thing changed, in Warlords. We used to be able to find mobs by doing behind-the-scenes tooltip scanning, because a mob you'd never been close to wouldn't have a tooltip, and the game client would start giving it one when you got sort-of-close. Warlords changed that so all mobs get tooltips, regardless of whether you've seen them yet. This means that we now have to rely on nameplates instead, which is less precise -- things like the direction you're looking in affect it, etc. (Though, of course, in anything Pandaria-and-after we get the minimap-icon vignettes, which are very helpful. It's the BC/Wrath/Cata stuff which is in an unfortunate gap in coverage.)
Okay, new alpha version includes automatic fading away of the popup.
Hmm which one gives me the color swatch for previous rares' pathing which wander a lot? I assume that's NPC Scan since Silver is the red cross with last seen, right?
Hi! I'm new to using add ons, but I am trying to add this one and when I add it to the AddOns folder and start wow, it will install it, but then nothing is there when I look at my list of add ons. All the others I have added have worked fine, not sure what I'm doing wrong for this one? Thank you!!
Make sure that the various folders (SilverDragon, SilverDragon_Legion, SilverDragon_Warlords, etc) are all directly in your addons directory, and that you haven't accidentally created another top-level SilverDragon directory that contains them?
I had done that, so I moved the folders straight into add ons, and then it didn't want to install when I started battle.net. It keeps saying "checking residency" with a bunch of numbers, and then "waiting on another installation or update." and this is the only thing new I'm trying to install. So now it's not playable because it keeps trying to install this. :(
That's somewhat weird, and I wouldn't expect it to be related to the addon -- just general Battle.net client weirdness.
I'm not sure how the addon is supposed to work now, but I don't like it :/
- every rare is now "unknown"
- if a rare is found after combat the popup won't show up after finishing combat
- when I mouse over the popup when it does show it tells me "left click to target" and "right click and drag to move the frame" yet nothing happens when I try
- all settings were reset without any warning so I have been spamming my guild with "unknown" rare sightings all morning without even knowing it
- everything looks and feels just like NPCScan now and I chose SilverDragon because I didn't like NPCScan...
I have tried downloading the addon manually, but it is still the same; nothing works. Reverted back to an older version and will stick to that until it breaks.
This is happening to me as well. It also removed all custom mob scanning I had input, and changed all my sounds back to default.
Same for me, so far every rare has been unknown
The "Unknown" thing is a bit weird. Do you have other addons installed that do anything particularly strange to tooltips behind the scenes? Also, could you private-message a copy of your silverdragon savedvariables to me?
The look is just a new default, since Legion / Warlords gave us a lot of convenient toast graphics to crib from. The old look is still there, if you go into the SilverDragon / ClickTarget settings and choose the "classic" style.
Same for me! This has been happening for a few days now. It was all good before
This is what it looks like for all mobs: http://imgur.com/a/D9rxD
Other person didn't reply, so could you maybe send me your SilverDragon savedvariables so I can take a look? They can be found at `<wow directory>/WTF/Account/<account name>/SavedVariables/SilverDragon.lua`
