SilverDragon - Rare Scanner
SilverDragon
SilverDragon tracks rares in World of Warcraft. It will try everything possible to notice them and tell you about them.
How does it search?
Vignettes
Those little skull icons you see on the minimap. If one of them is a rare SilverDragon knows about, it'll yell at you.
Targets
If you mouse over or target a rare mob, SilverDragon will notice it.
Nameplates
If you have enemy nameplates turned on, SilverDragon will keep an eye on them to look for the names of known rares.
Macro
SilverDragon can also create a macro to target any rares that are known in the current zone. You can stick this on your actionbars as a button to spam while chasing after a rare, or bind it to a key. This is sort of a last resort.
Chat
Some rares yell in zone chat. If SilverDragon notices those yells, it'll alert you.
Dark Magic
This abuses detection of when Blizzard blocks attempts to call a protected function (TargetUnit
) to work out when you're in targetting range of a unit with a given name
This inherently causes in-game errors, so it is disabled by default. Enable in the addon config under Scanning / Dark Magic
.
By default it's less-aggressive, scanning through rares in the zone without known vignettes at a rate of 1/second. However, you can turn that rate way up if you'd like. You can also turn on an option to automatically hide the error messages it causes, but beware that this will potentially cause taint issues that'll leave you needing to /reload
eventually.
How will I know when a rare is seen?
Frame
When a rare appears, SilverDragon will pop up a frame that you can click on to target it.
Warning: If you're in combat, secure action restrictions mean that it won't show up until combat finishes.
Sounds
You can choose from assorted sounds to play when a rare is seen. The sound can loop for a while, to make sure you don't miss it.
There's special settings for rares that drop mounts and world boss rares which you might want to call up a group for. If you're sitting mostly-AFK on a Time-Lost Proto Drake spawn, you probably want the sound that plays to be utterly ridiculous and go on for a good long while, to make sure you don't miss that sucker.
Messages
A notice can be sent to a number of places:
- your scrolling combat text
- your chat frame
- a channel in your chat frame (announcing it to your party, for instance)
- a popup window
- etc
History
A log of seen rares will be shown in a window, so you can easily glance over spawn times.
Other useful things?
Custom mobs
In SilverDragon's options you'll find a "Mobs" section. In the "Always" section, you can add any mob you want to be scanned for. All you need to know is the mob id.
So, let's say you wanted to keep an eye out for Lil Timmy in Stormwind, to buy the kitten he sells. You would...
- Go to his wowhead page.
- Grab his id from the URL. It's
8666
. - Enter
8666
into the "add" field, and click "okay". - Play with your new kitten.
Yes, this example dates me.
Ignoring mobs
If there's some mob you don't want to hear about for whatever reason, just go to the "Ignore" section of the options. Again, enter the mob's id into the "add" box, then click okay. Bam! You will never again be told that Vern is up.
(Actually, Vern is ignored by default. But you get the idea.)
Alternately, right-click the close button for the popup and that'll ignore it as well.
Syncs
SilverDragon will talk to itself. It can communicate with other copies of itself run by people in your party / guild, and tell you when they see a rare mob. (If there's a group of you camping all the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns, say...)
You can turn this off completely, if you want to be private about it.
Tooltips
Some rares are part of an achievement. When you mouse over a rare mob, SilverDragon will add to the tooltip whether you've already killed it, so you know whether you need to rush for it.
Broker
SilverDragon includes a Broker plugin. It'll attach itself to the addon compartment and also your minimap, or a Broker container you have installed, and show you a list of the mobs it knows about in the current zone.
Other addons you may find useful
- AppearanceTooltip: integrates with the SilverDragon loot popups and shows transmog-known status.
- ServerRestartSound: plays a sound when the server's about to restart. If you're AFK-camping for a rare spawn, you probably want to know about this.
- ObjectScanner: A few rares are hidden away behind interacting with world-objects like the Edge of Reality. These have to be localized individually, so you need to work out what they're called in your language and set up a watch for tooltips mentioning them. This addon does that bit.
- ButtonBin: a broker display. SilverDragon's minimap icon will show up on it (or any other addon like it) instead of cluttering up your minimap, if you have it installed.
Also what happened to being able to shift click on the ncps on the mini map to announce in to chat?
Only can announce when the pop up come up and it fades out sometimes before i can shift click. or like in the Maw where i have it disabled because of so many announcements there is no way with it disabled to announce to chat.
In reply to sanesyco:
Shift-clicking on the minimap/worldmap/broker-tooltip all still work for me. Check your settings -- you might have it trying to send to a non-applicable channel?
In reply to Kemayo:
Thank you , i guess i changed something in there, i can shift click on the map but not the mini map now.
Working on that
Can something be done about the super loud announcement when cloudtail is found?
Blows your ears out
Oh, that's probably it trying to play all four of the beasts-of-bastion announcements at once.
Newest alpha should be better for you. It'll only play one announcement at a time.
Is there a way to disable/enable map icons by zone? If not would this be a feature you consider implementing?
As for the why: I have a few handynotes add-ons that I prefer handling the map icons. While I'd like to have SilverDragon's map icons on the zones where I don't have any handynotes add-ons going for.
Hm, I'm not wildly opposed, but it's not high-priority for me either. I assume you'd want map and minimap both disabled?
In reply to Kemayo:
That's understandable.
For me, I'd be fine with just the world map icons being disabled by zone. Minimap ones are fine as they are.
In reply to Tofke:
Okay, if you check the current alpha you'll find that you can shift-click the broker icon in the map frame to toggle just that zone.
In reply to Kemayo:
Thank you Kemayo! It works like a treat, just what I was l looking for.
Hey. I am wondering if you could make the worldmap icons disappear if you are eligible to and have collected the loot and got the part of the achievement if there is one. I found that you seem to have this setting, but only for the Announcement.
Right now, the worldmap icons disappear if you have collected the part of the achievement, but the loot seems to be ignored.
In the settings: Map Overlay, you have the "Show achieved", but that's currently only for an actual mob kill, and ignored the loot. So another setting to remove the worldmap icons only if you have collected the loot also (or just the mount and/or pet) would be awesome. Thank you.
All in all, I would like this addon to act a bit more like HandyNotes in this way. When you kill a raremob on daily basis, the icon should disappear temporarily until you can kill it again, most likely the next day. So next day it will appear again when you can get a new chance to get loot that you do not have. When you have all loot (or the achiev and there's no loot), the icon should disappear, permanently since there is no longer any reason to kill that rare. If there is a mount and an item on the same rare, you could be able to choose to ignore the loot and just "complete" the mob by getting the mount.
I've got reworking all the show/announce settings on my to-do list. There's an issue for it, if you'd like to see some thoughts: https://github.com/kemayo/wow-silverdragon/issues/53
In reply to Kemayo:
Thank you so much for your reply, and you make me really happy that it's on your to-do list. This would make your addon complete for sure. :)
So anyway I was in Northrenad searching for TLPD but came across Vyragosa insteal (typical lol). But even though I had Vyragosa selected and was right near her, the addon didn't pick her up. No notification. Nothing. I checked and she's not been ignored per the settings either. Not sure why she wasn't getting detected. I visually noticed her cause she's a large, fat out of place dragon lol.
You might have "already found" unchecked in the announcement settings -- Vyragosa is just an achievement-mob without any special drops, so it won't announce her after you've killed her for the first time.
I've been using this addon since some time in BFA, and I love a lot of what's going on with it, so I wanted to come here and share a couple of thoughts/suggestions, in case you are looking for ideas.
One small qualify of life feature I would love to see is the ability to ignore NPCs directly from the tooltip. A lot of the time my alert for a rare would go off, I would decide I don't actually care about this rare, and then I would need to go dig in the addon's settings to disable it. I would find it much more convenient if I could do that from the popup directly.
And speaking of the popup, I love the ability to share a pin to rare's location, including its health (if it's know). I think that's a relatively new feature, and I wanted to heap some praise for it.
And finally, still on that popup, the (relatively) new mouseover loot info doesn't feel consistent to me. I would expect that if a rare has only a single notable drop (e.g. a mount or a piece of armor), mousing over the treasure icon would show me that loot - and there wouldn't have a "click to see more" message (which, when clicked, just shows me the same item).
But all of these are minor things I thought I'd just mention, the addon is still an easy daily driver for me, and I don't anticipate that changing anytime soon!
> I would find it much more convenient if I could do that from the popup directly.
You can do that -- right-click on the close button.
In reply to Kemayo:
That closes the popup, I meant that I would want to disable future alerts for this NPC altogether.
Well, I figure that any situation where you're saying "actually I don't care about this one", you probably are okay with closing the popup...
